Speaker A:

Good morning.

Speaker A:

I'm Haystack.

Speaker A:

And one of my favorite stories coming out of the World cup has absolutely nothing to do with soccer or football.

Speaker A:

No, it is the tourists.

Speaker A:

Apparently, fans from all over the world have come to America and discovered that, you know, it's actually pretty great.

Speaker A:

No matter what they've been told overseas.

Speaker A:

The.

Speaker A:

The fans are coming over and they're infatuated.

Speaker A:

Not with like, the Grand Canyon or Times Square or Hollywood.

Speaker A:

They're obsessed with Waffle House, Buc EE's free refills, air conditioning, barbecue, Walmart, Big Gulps.

Speaker A:

A German fan went viral documenting his journey across America, reviewing a Waffle House at 1am so he's obviously a brave guy, marveling at Buc EE's and treating the American south like it's Disneyland.

Speaker A:

And I kind of love it because, you know, Americans, we.

Speaker A:

We're bad about spending all day complaining about America.

Speaker A:

And somebody from Scotland shows up and says, you've got a gas station the size of an airport.

Speaker B:

Oh, beautiful.

Speaker B:

For Waffle House.

Speaker B:

Free refills of coffee, four giant BUC EE's, gas stations, their conditioning.

Speaker B:

America, America.

Speaker B:

World cup fans love their trip.

Speaker B:

Our stadiums have Jumbotrons and Jumbo sponsorships.

Speaker A:

You know, the entire thing is a bit of a reminder that sometimes you need an outsider to remind you what's cool about where you live.

Speaker A:

Americans have gotten so used to things like free refills and huge grocery stores, pickup trucks, air conditioning that we don't think about them.

Speaker A:

But tourists walk around like they've discovered an ancient wonder of the world.

Speaker A:

And maybe they're right.

Speaker A:

If you've never been Inside a Buc EE's on a Saturday afternoon, you'll find out that those things are basically the eighth wonder of the modern world.

Speaker A:

Nothing has done more for American tourism than foreigners seeing their first gas station the size of a supercenter.

Speaker A:

So maybe the best thing about hosting the World cup isn't showing the world America.

Speaker A:

Maybe it's letting America see itself through the eyes of people who are genuinely excited to be here.

Speaker A:

And apparently, those eyes are focused directly on a brisket sandwich and a Big Gulp.
