Episode 514

Alabama Bama on American Business Women’s Day

Published on: 22nd September, 2026

I'm chatting with my pal Bama, who called in early 'cause she's teachin' an entrepreneur seminar at the women's correctional facility — for real, she's bringin' the hustle to the ladies. We celebrate American Businesswoman's Day and, naturally, Bama's got a highlight reel of the wildest small-business ideas you ever heard. She brags about tanning beds in a daycare (yikes), a used mattress store called "As is now," and a dollar-store pregnancy kiosk dubbed Maybe Baby. Her newest pitch is a reversible wedding dress — white one side, black the other — cuz, ya know, depends how the night goes, and she's askin' for $50K plus bail money for 20%. We laugh, roll our eyes, and cheer her on — it's goofy, bold, and pure Bama energy.

Takeaways:

  • I love yakking with Bama; her wild biz tales remind me entrepreneurship can be goofy, bold, and fun.
  • We talked about her teaching at the women's correctional facility, showing how helping others sparks legit entrepreneurial lessons.
  • I rattled off ridiculous side-hustles like daycare tanning beds and used mattress shops, and we laughed but learned resilience.
  • I joked about asking for fifty grand plus bail money on Shark Tank, proving we hustle, joke, pivot, and keep dreaming stupidly big and refuse to grow up.

Speaker A:

Good morning.

Speaker A:

It's Haystack.

Speaker A:

It's pretty much my favorite time of the week when we chat with my dear old friend Bama down in rural Alabama.

Speaker A:

She's joining us on the phone and.

Speaker A:

Hey, Bama, we normally speak to you on Wednesday mornings, so I want to say thanks for calling in a day early and thanks for giving me a heads up that you're going to be all tied up tomorrow.

Speaker B:

Oh, yeah, Haystack.

Speaker B:

Tomorrow I'm a teaching an entrepreneur seminar down at the women's correctional facility.

Speaker A:

Wait a minute, wait a minute.

Speaker A:

You're teaching it?

Speaker B:

Well, technically, I'm a visitin somebody and I printed out some handouts, but that's how businesses get started.

Speaker A:

Of course.

Speaker A:

And today is actually the perfect day to be talking about this.

Speaker A:

This is American businesswoman's day.

Speaker B:

Oh, well, then there you go.

Speaker B:

Congratulations to every woman that's ever turned a bad decision into a source of income.

Speaker A:

Well, now, Bama, I'm not sure that's the official slogan.

Speaker B:

Well, it should be.

Speaker B:

I've had all kinds of businesses over the.

Speaker A:

Okay, wait, wait a minute.

Speaker A:

You've owned businesses?

Speaker B:

Well, yeah.

Speaker B:

You remember that tanning salon and I ran inside the daycare?

Speaker A:

Yeah, I definitely do not.

Speaker B:

Our slogan was stardom bronze.

Speaker A:

Wait, you put tanning beds in a daycare?

Speaker B:

Well, just two of them.

Speaker B:

And we kept them away from the nap mats after that first little incident.

Speaker A:

No, I'm afraid to ask what happened?

Speaker B:

Well, then there was my used mattress store.

Speaker A:

What was that one called?

Speaker B:

As is now.

Speaker A:

That is an unsettling name for a mattress store.

Speaker B:

Hey, we didn't ask no questions.

Speaker B:

And neither did the health department.

Speaker A:

I'm gonna guess that one didn't last very long either.

Speaker B:

Well, no, no, but I truly believed in my next idea.

Speaker B:

A pregnancy test kiosk in aisle 6 of the dollar General.

Speaker B:

Oh, no, I called it maybe baby.

Speaker A:

Yeah, of course you did.

Speaker B:

Yeah, right.

Speaker B:

Right there between the seasonal pantyhose and the generic cigarettes.

Speaker B:

You peed on the stick and slid it through the little winder.

Speaker B:

And for $5, I'd tell you whether to celebrate, cry, or call somebody named Travis Bama.

Speaker A:

I'm pretty sure there are laws about that.

Speaker B:

Well, now, that attitude is why you ain't no entrepreneur, Haystack.

Speaker A:

Okay, so are you.

Speaker A:

Are you working on any new business ideas?

Speaker B:

Well, as a matter of fact, I gotta go finish my application for the shark's tank.

Speaker A:

Oh, really?

Speaker A:

And what is it that you invented?

Speaker B:

I invented a reversible wedding dress.

Speaker B:

It's white on one side and black on the other.

Speaker A:

Now, why would you?

Speaker B:

Well, it depends on how the night goes.

Speaker A:

Now, I gotta be honest.

Speaker A:

That might be the first one of your businesses I actually kinda understand.

Speaker B:

I'm asking for $50,000 and bail money for 20%.

Speaker A:

And there it is.

Speaker B:

All right, sugar, I needs to go.

Speaker B:

I got an appointment at the pawn shop to see if they'll take half of a timeshare as collateral for a small business loan.

Speaker B:

Now, bam, Sugar, y' all have a good day.
