Speaker A:It's Haystack.
Speaker A:And many Americans enjoyed a long holiday weekend.
Speaker A:Of course, even if you did have to work, you probably saw or heard fireworks.
Speaker A:You probably smelled or tasted a cookout.
Speaker A:You may have felt the pangs of patriotism, unless that was just sweat from the heat.
Speaker A:But apparently about half of our nation was not completely sure what was going on.
Speaker A:A new national survey found that 46% of Americans do not know what America's 250th anniversary was commemorating.
Speaker A:They may have known it was, oh, it's the Fourth of July.
Speaker A:Yeah, but what's that?
Speaker A:I don't know.
Speaker A:53% Correctly responded that it celebrated the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.
Speaker A: ary since it happened back in: Speaker A:That's, that's.
Speaker A:For those of you who are bad at history and math, here are a few other interesting statistics that came from that nationwide survey.
Speaker A:86% Are grateful to be Americans.
Speaker A:79% Are proud to be Americans.
Speaker A:74% Believe the American dream is available to them personally.
Speaker A:And 61% believe America is a land of opportunity.
Speaker A:70% Believe America's founding principles remain relevant today.
Speaker A:But nearly 60% say that the country has indeed moved away from the founding principles.
Speaker A:And 56% say they worry the US could stop being a free country within the next 50 years.
Speaker A:Over three fourths of US, 77% say that for a country to remain free, most people need to try to be good, honest and responsible.
Speaker A:According to the survey, the biggest threats to our nation are corruption, concentrations and abuse of power, ignoring the founding principles, the rich having too much power, and moral decline.
Speaker A:Surprisingly, limited access to the McRib did not make the top 10.
Speaker A:Most Americans agree that the US is among the world's greatest countries, but only about a third say that it stands above all other nations.
Speaker A:And when we look at the top most valued freedoms, they are the freedom of speech coming in at number one, the right to vote and choose our leaders at number two, number three, equal protection under the law, number four, freedom of religion, and number five, the right to do process.
Speaker A:That according to the new nationwide survey.
Speaker A:So, yeah, some of us don't even know what that was all about.
